What is tourism tax (TTx)?

Tourism Tax (TTx) is a mandatory per-room-night charge levied on accommodation in Malaysia, collected by hotels and resorts and passed to the government to fund tourism development and services.

Malaysia's Tourism Tax (TTx) is a per-room-night levy applied to accommodation bookings across the country. Hotels, resorts, and similar lodging operators collect the tax directly from guests or their booking agents and remit it to the relevant state authority.

The tax rate varies by accommodation class and state jurisdiction. It appears as a distinct line item on invoices, quotations, and booking confirmations, separate from room charges and other fees. Tour operators include TTx in their quotes to clients as a mandatory add-on, not as part of the base accommodation price.

For tour operators and travel agents, TTx is a pass-through cost. It does not generate margin and must be collected from clients to be remitted through the accommodation provider. The tax affects the final cost of packaged tours, multi-day itineraries, and any offering that includes overnight stays at Malaysian properties.

TTx was introduced to fund tourism infrastructure, destination marketing, and regulatory services. Understanding TTx rates by location and property class is essential for accurate quote preparation and client communication, as it can represent a material portion of total accommodation cost on multi-night stays.
